On May 6, the International Transport Forum (ITF) Summit commenced in Leipzig, Germany, under the presidency of Azerbaijan.

This year’s summit is dedicated to the theme “Funding Resilient Transport” The topic holds particular significance amid climate change, urbanization, and ongoing technological advancements.

Speaking at the opening press conference, Minister of Digital Development and Transport, Rashad Nabiyev, expressed his gratitude to the International Transport Forum, which marks its 20th anniversary this year, for its committed partnership and the excellent organization of the event. He also thanked all member countries and partners for their active participation and support in advancing the shared transport agenda. It was emphasized that Azerbaijan has carried out its presidency of the ITF in a spirit of partnership, working towards strengthening the organization as a more robust and inclusive platform.

The Minister added that during Azerbaijan’s presidency, particular attention was also given to enhancing the efficiency of the organization’s institutional activities, and that agreement on the Work Programme had been reached through constructive cooperation with member countries. He emphasized Azerbaijan’s continued commitment to constructive and results-oriented cooperation within the ITF framework.

As part of the summit, the opening plenary session titled “The Price of Resilience: Why It Pays, Why It’s Hard” commenced.

During the opening segment, a video presentation showcasing Azerbaijan’s rich cultural heritage and modern development was screened. The video highlighted the country’s history, multicultural values, rapidly developing urban infrastructure, and transport and logistics potential through vivid visual imagery. This was followed by a musical program reflecting Azerbaijan’s national musical traditions. The live performance of traditional musical pieces added a distinctive atmosphere to the event and left the guests with a profound impression of the country’s culture.

The plenary session focused on the importance of resilience in the transport sector and its role in ensuring economic stability, connectivity, and the mitigation of long-term risks.

Speaking at the opening of the event, Minister of Digital Development and Transport, Rashad Nabiyev, emphasized the significance of the International Transport Forum as a platform for dialogue, practical cooperation, and collective progress.

The Minister noted that the theme “Funding Resilient Transport” highlights the importance of well-balanced and properly targeted investments to ensure that infrastructure remains resilient and adaptable to changing demands. He stressed that the efficient allocation of resources and the application of modern technologies are key to reducing long-term costs and improving the effectiveness of transport systems.

The Minister stated that Azerbaijan has adopted a more practical and results-oriented approach to its presidency, emphasizing strong support for strategic priorities through concrete mechanisms. He noted that during the chairmanship period, the main priorities included strengthening international transport connectivity, reinforcing the ITF as an inclusive platform for dialogue, improving policy frameworks, expanding participation, and ensuring institutional sustainability.

Participants of the summit were also informed about Azerbaijan’s initiatives aimed at enhancing the resilience and efficiency of its transport sector, including key infrastructure projects along the Middle Corridor. It was noted that, alongside infrastructure development, significant investments have also been made in digital systems. All these measures are intended to ensure that transport investments generate long-term value and support sustainable economic development.

As part of the summit, an exhibition showcasing the products, services, and innovative initiatives of International Transport Forum partners was also organized. Azerbaijan is represented at the exhibition with a national stand.

ITF Secretary-General Young Tae Kim, Germany’s Federal Minister for Transport Patrick Schnieder, as well as other ministers and heads of delegations participating in the summit, visited the Azerbaijani stand.

Visitors are provided with detailed information on Azerbaijan’s key achievements in the transport sector and its forward-looking initiatives. The presentation creates favorable opportunities for establishing direct contacts with officials from various countries, international investors, and technology experts, as well as for exploring innovative solutions on site.

At the end of the day, a cultural program was presented on behalf of Azerbaijan to the participants, showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage, national music, and traditional dance performances.
