Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova has met with Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the National Congress of the Dominican Republic Alfredo Pacheco on the sidelines of the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (IPU) held in Istanbul.
There was an exchange of views about the growth prospects of the inter-parliamentary connections and about other matters during the meeting.
The importance of our countries’ co-operation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union, UN and other international organisations was high-lit in the conversation; it was stressed that the co-operation served common interests.
Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova spoke of the special importance that Azerbaijan attaches to broadening international co-operation and promoting parliamentary diplomacy. The Speaker mentioned Azerbaijan’s having come up with significant initiatives during the country’s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement to strengthen the Member States’ solidarity, including promotion of mutual support in defence of the interests of the small island developing states as well as to respond to global challenges jointly. She proceeded to say also that as part of the COP29 chairmanship Azerbaijan kept the concerns of the small island developing states in her view and gave special importance to uniting efforts internationally to solve the problems they face. A special summit dedicated to the problems of the small island developing states was held to this end in the format of COP29. At the same time, Sahiba Gafarova underlined the establishment of the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement and its having become, consequent to institutional evolution, a platform of importance for multilateral parliamentary co-operation.
Alfredo Pacheco stated his country’s being interested in expanding the ties with Azerbaijan and said that intensification of the contacts between the Parliaments would provide for the relations’ development.
