The delegation led by Speaker of the Congress of Deputies of the Kingdom of Spain Francina Armengol Socias, in our country on an official visit, arrived at the Milli Majlis on 23 January.
Once shown around the plenary chamber of the Parliament, the guests went over to the Heydar Aliyev Museum where Francina Armengol signed the Memorial book.
Then, there was an expanded-format meeting of Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova and the delegation headed by Speaker of the Congress of Deputies of the Kingdom of Spain Francina Armengol Socias.
The special significance of this visit to Azerbaijan as the first one for Speaker of Parliament of Spain was underlined at the meeting. It was remarked that this visit, which followed the first official visit of Speaker of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan to the Kingdom of Spain in May 2025, is a vivid token of attention paid to the advancement of the inter-parliamentary relations between Spain and Azerbaijan. A confidence was expressed during the conversation that this visit would contribute to the continuing strengthening of the co-operative ties between our parliaments as well as our countries.
It was said that the active dialogue of our countries, especially demonstrable over the past periods, is a very significant factor. For instance, an agreement was achieved at the meeting with President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr Ilham Aliyev during the working visit of Prime Minister of Spain Mr Pedro Sanchez to our country in the COP29 context in November 2024 as to undertaking a number of important joint initiatives to broaden the connections. The continuation of that dialogue as well as reciprocal visits and meetings will enable us to combine forces to continue developing our relations.
The meeting saw an exchange of views upon expanding the framework of treaties and legal instruments between the two countries with a view to stimulating the growth of bilateral co-operation as well as about the role of economic interaction in our countries’ relationship, the operation of Spanish companies in Azerbaijan and the import of co-operation in renewable energy, education, science and culture.
As she was talking about the role of inter-parliamentary co-operation, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis pointed up the significance of reciprocal visits for the advancement of our parliaments’ linkage; she also high-lit the activities of the Azerbaijani Parliament’s working group for the inter-parliamentary relations Azerbaijan-Spain.
The Speaker of the Milli Majlis informed the guest of the projects implemented by Azerbaijan to export renewable energy resources to Europe, the important role that Azerbaijan is playing as a transit country in the Middle Corridor currently and the progress of the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Speaker Sahiba Gafarova remarked that the de factor peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia pursuant to the Washington Summit of August last year has changed our regional realia entirely. Azerbaijan and President Ilham Aliyev are the authors of this wholly new reality of peace and security in our region. The Speaker of the Milli Majlis expressed a confidence that a peace treaty would be signed between the two countries promptly following the initialling of the peace treaty in Washington, D.C.
Having witnessed her contentment with being in Azerbaijan, Speaker of the Congress of Deputies of the Kingdom of Spain Francina Armengol Socias shared the impressions from the Victory Museum she had visited and the development in our country she had seen.
She noted that Spain supports the sovereignty of Azerbaijan and is interested in advancing the co-operation with her in diverse areas.
The Speaker of Parliament talked about the importance of the economic-sector relations present between our countries and, amongst others, touched upon the significance of the co-operation in the energy sector whilst also expressing the readiness to expand Spanish companies’ activities in Azerbaijan further.
Also during the conversation there was an exchange of opinions about growth prospects of the inter-parliamentary links and about other matters of shared interest.
Following the meeting, the guests acquainted themselves with the ‘Victory Corner’ established in the foyer of the Milli Majlis and dedicated to the 44-day Patriotic War.
