Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Head of the European Union Delegation to Azerbaijan Marijana Kuyundzhič on 17 December.
Speaker Sahiba Gafarova congratulated the Head of Delegation on the beginning of the diplomatic tenure in our country and wished her success in the upcoming work.
The meeting included an exchange of opinions about the Azerbaijan-European Union relationship. In particular, contentment was voiced with the positive dynamic in the relations as well as in reciprocal visits and meetings during 2025; the importance of the meetings of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev with President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen for the discourse covering various aspects of the bilateral agenda was stressed as well.
Head of the European Union Delegation to Azerbaijan Marijana Kuyundzhič offered congratulations on the achievements along the path to peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia, describing those as a historic event. The diplomat said that the progress in reaching peace between the parties is a momentous occurrence for the region as well as for the Continent and the world at large.
The Speaker of the Milli Majlis updated the diplomat on the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process including the steps taken to build confidence between the parliaments.
In this context, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova touched upon the elements of the ‘Strategic Agenda for the Partnership between the European Union and Armenia’ that give rise to concern in relation to the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament mentioned the close co-operation of the Milli Majlis with the European Union Member States’ parliaments. She recalled fondly her own trips and meetings to that end.
As she broached the European Parliament’s resolutions levelled at Azerbaijan, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova remarked that the regional realia as they are today and the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace achievements demonstrate once more how biased those resolutions happen to be.
Besides, the conversation addressed various aspects of the relationship between Azerbaijan and the European Union. For instance, they underlined the importance of the energy-sector partnership. At the same time, the existing new options to enhance co-operation in transport, trade and other fields were high-lit.
