A delegation from the State Maritime and Port Agency (SMPA) represented Azerbaijan at the seminar titled “Identification of Specific Competences for Seafarers Operating Ships Using Alternative Fuels and Energy Systems”, organized by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.
The international event was attended by the Head of the Seafarers’ Documentation Department, Sabuhi Orujov, and Senior Specialist of the Training and Certification Center, Rustam Aslanli.
During the seminar, participants discussed the adaptation of the provisions of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) to new technologies, the development of new curricula for educational institutions and training centers, as well as the regulatory and practical steps necessary to enhance the level of specialized training for seafarers. International best practices related to the safety requirements, risk assessment, bunkering operations, and energy system management of hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, and other alternative fuel types were also presented.
Sabuhi Orujov, Head of the SMPA’s Seafarers’ Documentation Department, expressed confidence that participation in the seminar will create substantial opportunities for strengthening cooperation with the European Commission, the International Maritime Organization, educational institutions and training centers, maritime administrations, and industry representatives, as well as for learning advanced practical approaches.
