This week a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) delegation was in Baku to review ongoing preparations for WADA’s 2026 European Regional Symposium that will be co-hosted by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan National Anti-Doping Agency (AMADA).
WADA is holding four Regional Symposium’s in 2026 with the European edition taking place in Baku. The Symposiums are being designed to address the unique regional needs and challenges of stakeholders in the lead up to implementation of the 2027 World Anti-Doping Code (Code) and International Standards, which will be approved during WADA’s World Conference on Doping in Sport in Busan, Republic of Korea, in December; and enter into force on 1 January 2027.
The WADA delegation, which was led by Sébastien Gillot, WADA’s Director, European Office and Sport Movement Relations; and Riziero Pisani, Events Manager, examined the planned venue and related infrastructure facilities. Mr. Gillot noted that preparations are progressing to a high standard and are fully in line with the agreed plan. He highlighted that hosting the 2026 European Regional Symposium in Baku will be a milestone for both WADA and the Azerbaijani sports community.
In turn, Mr. Pisani highlighted that holding the Symposium during AMADA’s 10th anniversary year demonstrates the Agency’s sustained collaboration with WADA and its dedication to advancing anti-doping efforts in the region. The delegation commended AMADA’s role in organizing the Symposium and praised Azerbaijan’s proven ability to host major international events with professionalism and excellence.
