Climate change is one of the biggest challenges requiring collective efforts and the fate of future generations depends on the steps we take today. The choice of Azerbaijan as host of the twenty-ninth session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-29) and the holding of the event in Baku this November should be seen as recognition of Azerbaijan's efforts to combat climate change not only at the national, but also at the regional and global levels.

Speaker of the Milli Majlis and Head of the Azerbaijani Delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union Sahiba Gafarova expressed such thoughts in her speech at the 148 Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva in the Swiss Confederation on 23 March.

Azerbaijan is honoured to host COP-29 and we are aware of the responsibility that goes along with it, the Milli Majlis Speaker said. Sahiba Gafarova said Azerbaijan, which has the potential to unite communities and countries for a common cause, is ready to direct the efforts of the international community on climate change aimed at building a just and sustainable future.

Stressing the importance of all parties’ engagement in advancing the climate action and achieving the common goals, Speaker Sahiba Gafarova contended that we can only realise our common visions for a sustainable and prosperous future through constructive cooperation, greater responsibility and collective action

Sahiba Gafarova mentioned the Inter-Parliamentary Union having defined climate change as one of the four priority areas requiring urgent intervention before saying that the Inter-Parliamentary Union had negotiated a great path supporting parliaments’ efforts to combat climate change and mobilising their activities connected to it.

Considering the special importance of this matter in the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s work and acting upon the initiative of the IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong, the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the IPU plan to organise a parliamentary meeting behind the scenes of the COP-29. That meeting will greatly enable parliamentarians to exchange opinions about tackling climate changes and to discuss proposals regarding the handling of climate change, according to Sahiba Gafarova.
