The delegation of the State Maritime and Port Agency (SMPA) represented Azerbaijan at the 2nd extraordinary session of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee, held in London.

The Agency was represented by Advisor to the Chairman of the Management Board, Habil Abbasov, and Head of the Marine Environment Protection Department, Farid Murtuzov.

During the session, participants discussed the proposed amendments to Annex VI of the 1973 International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), the IMO’s Net Zero Framework, reports and work plans of the working groups and adopted relevant decisions.

As part of the event, an agreement was reached to postpone the continuation of discussions on the adoption of the Net Zero Framework for one year. During this period, IMO member states will continue to work towards reaching a consensus on the Framework.

Habil Abbasov, Advisor to the Chairman of the Management Board of SMPA, emphasized the importance of the session, noting the significance of the Committee’s decisions on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships. He highlighted that postponing the continuation of discussions for one year to allow further refinement of the draft document is considered a notable and constructive step forward.
