The First International Scientific Conference titled “Return to Western Azerbaijan as a New Stage of the National Idea,” co-organized by Baku State University (BSU) and the Western Azerbaijan Community, has commenced.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, BSU Rector Elchin Babayev emphasized that the issue of return to Western Azerbaijan should be viewed through the lenses of international humanitarian law, human rights, and historical justice. He noted the important role of higher education institutions in conducting research, preserving historical heritage, and strengthening the academic foundation of the return concept.

Chairman of the Western Azerbaijan Community Aziz Alakbarli highlighted the organization’s efforts to ensure the peaceful, safe, and dignified return of Western Azerbaijanis to their ancestral lands in accordance with international law and the principles of peace and coexistence.

The event was also addressed by Shamil Ayrim, a member of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye and Chairman of the Azerbaijan–Türkiye Interparliamentary Friendship Group; Metin Karimli, Head of the Office of the Ministry of Science and Education; Musa Gasimli, Deputy Speaker of the Milli Majlis; Isa Habibbayli, President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences; Mahira Huseynova, Vice-Rector of the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University and member of the Board of the Women's Council of the Western Azerbaijan Community; Vagif Shadlinsky, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Elders of the Western Azerbaijan Community; and Anar Bagirov, Chairman of the Bar Association of Azerbaijan.

The conference will discuss the historical, legal, political, cultural and socio-philosophical aspects of return to Western Azerbaijan, its significance for regional peace and security.

The conference will feature 3 panel sessions and hear about 100 reports.
