At the Faculty of Chemistry of Baku State University, Corresponding Member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and Head of the Science Support Department at the Institute of Chemistry of the Ministry of Science and Education of Azerbaijan, Muhammed Babanli, delivered a master class titled “Chemistry of Topological Insulators and Some Issues of Materials Science,” dedicated to Science Day (March 27).
In his lecture, the speaker noted that one of the priority areas of modern interdisciplinary research at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and materials science is the creation and study of a new generation of inorganic functional materials—topological insulators. He explained that a topological insulator represents a special quantum state of matter: while these materials behave as insulators in their bulk, they demonstrate high spin-polarized conductivity on their surfaces.
According to Babanli, these properties open broad prospects for developing new fields of electronics based on topological insulators, including spintronics and topological quantum computing. The materials are also considered promising for use in terahertz detectors applied in medicine and security systems, as well as in next-generation electronic and quantum devices.
The scientist emphasized that research in inorganic materials science in Azerbaijan has been conducted for more than 50 years, leading to the formation of a strong scientific school. Systematic studies on topological insulators have been carried out since 2011, during which Azerbaijani researchers have established extensive international collaboration with leading scientific centers in the European Union and Japan. The results of this cooperation have been published in more than 30 scientific articles in high-impact journals indexed in Web of Science.
He also noted that in 2019 a joint article by scientists from Azerbaijan and several other countries, titled “Prediction and Observation of Antiferromagnetic Topological Insulators,” was published in the journal Nature. The paper was recognized as one of the best scientific articles of the past five years at the International Congress of Basic Science.
