Minister Parviz Shahbazov made a speech at the event dedicated to the Remembrance Day of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev at George Washington University in the USA. In his speech, the Minister said that Heydar Aliyev was a leader who had outstanding services in the history of Azerbaijan's statehood. It was emphasized that the strategic framework of energy, security and economic cooperation has been formed as a result of the efforts of the national leader to create a reliable and stable partnership with the United States. The Contract of the Century, signed in 1994 as a product of Heydar Aliyev’s strategic vision, was described as the first achievement of the Azerbaijan-U.S. energy partnership and as the beginning of the United States’ close involvement in all processes related to the export of the Caspian Sea’s energy resources to international markets. Quoting the National Leader, the Minister said: “As the National Leader himself stated, I believe that it was first in America that this was called the Contract of the Century. Without the support of the United States, we would have been able to sign neither the first contract in 1994, nor the contract on the Baku–Ceyhan oil pipeline. It was further noted that the signing of four contracts between the oil companies of both countries at the White House following the Contract of the Century, as well as the implementation of the Baku - Supsa and Baku -Tbilisi - Ceyhan pipelines and the Southern Gas Corridor projects with U.S. support stand as successful examples of our energy partnership.
It was also emphasized that, as the worthy successor of the National Leader’s legacy, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, together with the President of the United States, H.E. Mr. Donald Trump, is currently strengthening bilateral relations, while our energy partnership is entering a new strategic phase.
The event also featured speeches by Azerbaijan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United States Khazar Ibrahim, Rector of ADA University Hafiz Pashayev and Member of Parliament and Head of the Working Group on Azerbaijan-U.S. Inter- Parliamentary Relations Samad Seyidov. The film “İz,” shot at the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, was screened.
