In her speech today at the international parliamentary conference ‘Parliamentarism: Traditions and Perspectives’ held in the Milli Majlis, Speaker of the Milli Majlis, Sahiba Gafarova also informed the audience of the defamatory and disinformation campaigns against Azerbaijan that are based on false accusations and are waged by a number of Western countries and their parliaments, including organisations such as PACE and the European Parliament.

Speaker Sahiba Gafarova recalled that the 44-day Patriotic War of the autumn of 2020 and the anti-terrorist measures of September 2023 had put an end to 30 years of occupation and injustice, restoring and maintaining Azerbaijan's territorial integrity and sovereignty. At the same time, it was through the initiative of our country that opportunities were created for establishing long-term peace and stability in the South Caucasus. According to her, a number of Western countries and their parliaments, such as PACE and the European Parliament, are conducting defamatory and disinformation campaigns against Azerbaijan and interfering in the internal affairs of our country against the backdrop of all those processes. As the Speaker of the Milli Majlis emphasised, the only reason for this is Azerbaijan’s rejection of any dictatorship and the country’s having liberated her lands from occupation and pursuing an independent policy based on national interests.

The Speaker of the Milli Majlis said that such provocations were evident at the time of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Baku. She stressed that while Azerbaijan sought to unite global efforts in the fight against such a global issue that climate change happens to be, some circles, locked in pursuit of narrow political interests, called for a boycott of this world event and raised absurd accusations against our country. However, their provocations were unsuccessful.

According to Sahiba Gafarova, the COP29 was held to the highest standards and was marked by significant results. The Milli Majlis, too, contributed to this important process by organising the Parliamentary Meeting on the margins of the COP29.

‘Regrettably, unwarranted pressure, double standards and interference in internal affairs are the negative phenomena that our countries often encounter in the modern world. This, in turn, underscores the importance of mutual support and joint action. We can achieve our goals by utilising all available opportunities in parliamentary diplomacy and being guided by constructive dialogue and cooperation. Our current parliamentary conference is, in fact, a vivid expression of our common intention in this regard,’ said Sahiba Gafarova.
